MGM Declairs Chapter 11

via TheMovieBlog.com:

Looks as though Metro Goldwyn Mayer was forced to file Chapter 11 this past week.  The studio was forced by a private investor and now, looks like the entire library of films will be up for auction.  There are some great titles on the MGM label.  It will be interesting to see what the other studios try and buy up when the bidding starts.

Remember that One Movie? 'batteries not included'

This week I want to take you back to 1987.

'batteries not included' is the story of some down on their luck apartment building tenants and their unlikely bonding with aliens from outer space.

It's a feel good film, but I still feel that it holds up today.  Yes some of the graphics and CGI work are not so great, but who really cares?  It's a classic from the 80's and I think it's still a tremendously fun film to watch.

Director: Matthew Robbins (the Legend of Billie Jean)
Starring: Academy Award Winner Jessica Tandy (Driving Miss Daisy), Hume Cronyn (her real life husband) and Elizabeth Peña (Rush Hour).

Ryan Reynolds is 'Buried'.

There has been talk about this film since it premiered a while back at Sundance.  Now it's got a distribution deal and will be causing panic attacks soon!

I'll see it, not sure if I'm jumping up and down to do so, but I enjoy the concept.

Gordon-Levitt & Johansson might be in Zombie Love?

We're all looking for a good zombie love story, aren't we?

Looks like Diablo Cody ("Juno", "Jennifer's Body") will be producing the book to screen adaptation of S.G. Browne's novel 'Breathers: A Zombie's Lament' for Fox Searchlight.

Though the interesting news is that Joseph Gordon-Levitt ("500 Days of Summer) and Scarlett Johansson (Iron Man 2) are apparently "loosely" attached.

I'm intrigued.   These are two of my favorite actors working today and seeing them together in a zombie film could be freakin awesome.

Here is a Synopsis of the story:

"Andy Warner reanimates after the car accident that kills his wife, but is too mangled from his injuries to talk. He lives in his parents' wine cellar, occasionally attending a zombie support group and struggling to rejoin a society that offers the undead no rights, bans them from working and doesn't even punish those who destroy them. When Andy and his fellow zombies—notably Rita, a sexy suicide victim with a lipstick fetish, and Jerry, a Playboy-obsessed stoner—learn why they're so driven to consume human flesh, the repercussions are both tragic and hilarious. Browne neatly mixes humor and extreme violence with a surprisingly tender love story, some witty social satire and an extremely strong narrative voice."

Back to the Future NIKE shoes possible in 2015!

MSNBC is reporting that the popular footwear company has filed a patent for a self-lacing shoe that resembles the sneakers from BACK TO THE FUTURE II that practically everyone and their mothers wanted.

According to the patent, “the automatic lacing system provides a set of straps that can be automatically opened and closed to switch between a loosened and tightened position of the upper. The article further includes an automatic ankle cinching system that is configured to automatically adjust an ankle portion of the upper."

This would be pretty awesome. Not gonna lie. I think I'd have to get a pair.

In honor of this awesomeness. I have to also share the Hewy Lewis Tune below. Enjoy!

Jeremy Renner cast in Mission Impossible 4

You may know him from his work in the Academy Award winning film "The Hurt Locker" or now by the press he's been getting for landing the role of "Hawkeye" in the new AVENGERS film.

But looks as though Paramount studios has announced that Jeremy Renner will be joining Tom Cruise in the next Mission Impossible film. Yeah, that means there will be 4 of them.

I didn't think the last film warranted another follow-up, but they are giving it to us anyway. At least they're thinking ahead.

According to Deadline, Paramount production chief Adam Goodman feels Renner "has a Daniel Craig quality" that he wants for the role. Sources tell the site that the studio was also looking for an actor who might be able to continue on with the franchise, should Cruise choose not to return in the future (Cruise is expected to return for a fifth installment).

Well, if you're unfamiliar with Renner, I think he's an actor you should check out. I've had the opportunity to meet him on a few occasions and he's a hell of a good guy. Down to earth and know what he wants from this business. Films like "Dahmer", "Neo Ned", "North Country", "S.W.A.T." and "The Hurt Locker" have set him up for great success and now he's reaping the benefits!

Keep a look out for him and this new "Mission: Impossible" film, sometime next year.

Madonn's 36 year old son?

I don't know if there is any truth to this or not, but there is a movie coming out in August so who cares.
I'm sure Madonna's publicist will issue a statement soon enough. But you have to admit, if he is her son, then this is one crazy story.

Here are the two 'Material.Boy' trailers.

'Monsters' in time for Halloween

"Monsters," writer-director Gareth Edwards' shoestring budget horror film, has been slated for release on Oct. 29.

Edwards went to the south of France this year to screen the film at the Cannes Market, possibly spending more on travel and lodging than he did on his film, which nonetheless earned raves, and promptly got picked up by Magnet films.

"Monsters" has been described as “like 'Lost in Translation,' set in Mexico, but with gigantic alien monsters,” by /Film, which reported that Edwards spent a whopping $15,000 shooting his film.

Check out the featurette below to learn some of his tricks.

making 'Candy' continues...

Have you ever said "I have the best idea for a film."?
Have you ever actually followed through with that idea?
If you have, then you probably found out that it's not as easy as people make it seem.

Right now I am back in Florida and in the bowls of finishing my first short film 'Candy'. Though people have said, many times, don't bother with shorts, they're not really films, I am here to tell you they are all wrong.

I never saw 'Candy' as anything but a short film. Quick and to the point. Stylized more like a 50's sitcom then anything. But with the edgy style of Hitchcock or even a Twilight Zone episode.

'Candy' is a labor of love. I have always wanted that 1950's life. The 'Leave it to Beaver' perfection. Knowing full well it could not happen, the next best thing is to create it. I am quite sure this will not be my only visit to that time period in my career.

I want the audience to forget about every myth & genre specific plot they've seen in the past when they sit down to watch 'Candy'. Horror started in a place where the thrill and anticipation was a giant part of the plot. Let's be honest here. The genre has become over run by blood and tits. There is nothing wrong with gore films, I enjoy them. I just decided that I wanted to bring us back to a place where the genre had class, sexy style and an allure.

Right now, I am forging forward with my production and I can not thank everyone involved up to this point enough.

Currently we are still finishing up the edit and making sure things are clean. We will not have this out to the public until September (we hope) and I am working on what Venue's will be hosting a screening.

Yes we are still accepting donations to finish this film. It's a tireless effort on all are parts.

I'm also quite pleased to say that Stop Starring Clothing and TiGi hair care have been so kind to give us some products for our shoots. Thank you to these great companies for supporting an indie film!

Universal cans "Cartel"

Looks like no one can save "Cartel" from being shut down. Universal has canned the $42.5 million film before it soared over budget.

The studio felt it wasn't a strong enough script to continue to sink money into when they were sure there would be no significant profit from the film.

A remake of the 1993 Italian film La Scorta, (because we needed another remake) the film was set to star Josh Brolin. Though a talented actor, the studio wasn't sure that this film would net any profits as it's budget continued to climb. But no worries for Brolin as he has a "PAY-OR-PLAY" deal with the studio. This means he'll still net his 7 figure salary even though the film will not be made. How nice for him.

I'm going to say what most people in this industry won't say, Why the Fuck are studios plummeting their businesses into the ground with rehashed ideas and untalented writers?

If a company knows they don't like the script, then why begin pre-production? They waste the time of everyone involved in the project. Now all of those crew members are out of work because the project was weak to begin with, this is bad business.

Looks like the only one walking away safe is Josh Brolin. Good for him and his management team for covering their bases. They probably knew the project was doomed when Sean Penn walked away and figured this was a safety net.

I do not agree with actor salaries. Maybe, one day I'll eat those words if I ever bank 7 figures for a role, but let's be honest, does Josh Brolin deserve a 7 figure salary for not doing any work?

The money Universal sank into getting the film this far into pre-production and then pulling out could have easily made 20 indie films.

Maybe they'll be more cautious before they greenlight a project that doesn't have a strong foundation.

Movie Title it's how you win awards

I do believe it is quite Obvious to the movie going public, what makes an academy award winning film. But honesty, Brutal Honesty, can open your eyes sometimes.

This is worth watching.

I love when the dude screams "Lead Females Name!"
Classic.
